Gomphocarpus fruticosus (Cape Milkweed) is a plant which grows abundantly in the area I currently live in South Africa. I've been fascinated by the spiky, inflated seed capsules on long, airy stems. For my SBA Diploma portfolio, this was one of my plant drawing choices. During the process, I noticed tiny green caterpillars (Danaus chrysippus) eating the elongated leaves. Within weeks they were fully grown and ready to metamorphose. Finally, five beautiful African Monarch butterflies slipped out of the pupae and wafted gently onto the grass. An unforgettable experience.

Coloured pencil

Aeonium arboreum, Helichrysum petiolare, Lycianthes rantonnetii, Sarcostemma viminale (Tree house leek, silver bush everlasting, blue potato bush, rope cactus) make up the 'Mixed composition' for another of my SBA diploma portfolio drawings. It was fun to compose the various plants gathered from my South African Karoo garden and capture each one's special qualities. I particularly love the dainty deep blue potato bush flowers with their subtle scent.
